Inserts Vs. Auxiliary

Please explain which effects are considered "inserts" and which effects are best for auxiliary sends & returns

INSERT when you want to CHANGE something (EQ, compression, pitch, etc.).

SEND AN AUX when you want to ADD something (reverb, delay, flange, etc.).

What about sidechains? When & when not to use them

You use them when you need them, you don't use them when you don't. I wish there was a better explanation... The side-chain insert on a compressor is either triggered by the signal or it's triggered by a signal of your choosing.
