I didn't even know you could buy a black box that is just a gate and nothing more?? You can get a microgate for under $100, but dont expect top shelf response from it.

Why would you? Most of the stuff I use, the gate is built in to the compressor....

Dedicated gates have a lot more control, like these.

Many are frequency-conscious, ie you can set a gate on the kick to only respond to 100hz, which lets you use much lighter gating, as it won't open when the snare gets hit.
