Echo Audiofire 4 with Vista x64 = Problems

I just got an Audiofire 4 and have installed the latest drivers and
upgraded the firmware to the lastest version. I'm running Vista x64 and Echo says that the Audiofire 4 is 100% compatible with Vista x64.

When I do not have a mic plugged into one of the front XLR jacks
everything seems to work ok, I get playback and Windows recognized the
unit for both playback and recording.

If I plug a mic into one of the front XLR jacks, as soon as I try to
either play any audio or record anything I get errors and the driver
seems to crash. I then have to unplug the mic and reboot the device to
get the drivers to load again.

This happens when I simply try to play any audio such as an mp3 with
winamp, or if I try to record anything or even just monitor the mic. I
hear a kind of crackle/pop and then everything goes dead and the
driver crashes, and the Audiofire 4 device disappears from the sound
control panel in Windows for both playback and recording.

Any ideas on what I can try to get this fixed, or should I just return the Echo box?

I was using a Presonus unit before this and I never had any major problems with it but was hoping the Echo would sound cleaner.

Thanks!

Do you have SP1 installed on Vista? Echo "strongly recommends it". I'm not using the Audiofire or Vista, but have had luck with all products from them now and in the past.

Did you read the readme file with the driver download?

Perhaps silly questions, but needed to ask to get this going.

Thanks for the reply. Yea I have SP1 installed on Vista (it's fully up to date).

The readme that came with the driver didn't have any useful info in it but yea I read it.

I'd say the problem was with Vista... (thanks Captain Obvious)...

But seriously, I would never try to support any audio application or device in that POS OS...

If the machine's strictly for recording, or you have no urgent need to be running Vista... I'd back it down to XP... that thing rocks...

I have to agree with using XP.

I am using the current drivers and firmware Echo provides AF4.

It rocks. No problems, glitches, or issues
