Plugging in and Unpluggin USB interface

Hi. I'm a Newbbie. I am using a computer and am recording a digital Piano through a USB MIDI interface. The interface is from Cakewalk. I have read that I should not plug my piano into my computer with the computer on. I have also read that I should not unplug my piano without closeing and stoping the USB connection. When I close other things plugged into the USB port, I click on a green arrow in the Sys tray. When my piano is plugged into the USB port, there is no green arrow in the Sys tray.

So; to unplug my piano, do I need to close and stop the USB connection and if so, how do I do that without the green arrow?

Can I plug in my piano to the USB port after I turn on my computer?

I'm worryed I'm gonna mess up my piano.
Thanks
ERin

you should have no problems hot swapping USB controllers. The only time it is really important to unmount a USB device is when it is a storage device, everything else you can plug in and out as much as you want
