    Need a MIDI Editor

    Hi. I'm looking for a free or cheap MIDI editor. All I need it to do is tell me what is on each of the MIDI Channels. I'm importing MIDI files from the net onto my drum machine and I need to know which channel is the bass....every file I find seems to be different.
    A good friend will come and bail you out of jail. A true friend will be sitting beside you saying "Dude, we f----- up!"

    There is no such thing.

    Midi files do not come with any type of stock description as far as ID'ing piano from organ or melody from drums.

    My recommendation: play the file and try various categories (wind, strings, bass, etc) with each track in solo mode. It should be quite obvious with just a few minutes experimentation how the tracks break down.

    Freeware JAZZ++ from www.jazzware.com does

    Besides the midi instrument number, there are user comments for the channel

    I use this program as my drum machine, and is more versatile, because it can be done with simply a PC keyboard and mouse

    Soundblaster using 8 meg Soundfonts has 10 drum kits (GS) and 300+ instruments
