midi synch playback with hardware

hey gang, i have a korg esx1 and i'm trying to midi synch it to use as a master to control my sp 505. ive followed the instructions in both manuals and connected the midi out from the master to the the midi in on the slave. only problem is, when i hit play, i can only here the korg, the sp 505 has the flashing lights to signify something being played, but i cant hear anything. essentially, im just trying to get both to play at the same time for a performance.

any help would be greatly appreciated.
