Guitar/audio to midi converter?

Is there such a thing as an audio and/or guitar to midi converter? I'd like to play guitar and have it trigger a module such as a Korg, Roland, Alesis, etc. I'm aware of the Roland and Yamaha guitar synths, and that isn't what I want. I'm just after a guitar or audio to midi coverter. Someone mentioned a Roland product, but couldn't remember the model number or name.

Any help would be GREATLY appreciated.

The best is some kind of Midi guitar, ie a guitar that outputs MIDI. There are several varieties:
- Guitar-like Midi-controllers that doesn't make any sound by themselves, and just outputs midi. They never caught on, I don't know if any are still manufactured. The Synthaxe is one I can remember.
- Ordinary electric guitars with built-in midi. Casio made this once.
- Add-ons to the guitar that turn any guitar into a midi-guitar. Roland's GK-1 + GR-33 is examples of this.
If you have some kind of box or software that takes sound and convert it to MIDI you will only be able to play one note at a time. The above things also are quite happy with chords.
