Dumb question, but still need to know

What is the relation of the soundcard to the midi playback? What I'm trying to say I guess is that currently my SB Live uses Creative Soundfont Synt or Windows Wavetable. I have an external synth module and use it's sounds via midi messages from the PC, however I'm not sure if additional, more realistic sounding samples can be downloaded or if it is soley hardware based.

There is none unless your soundcard has onboard hardware synth (like yours) or you are using software synths. Your external synth should have different patches available also, so search the web for free ones or check out kidnepro.com. If the sound module is just a rompler, then there is nothing that can be changed short of some basic parameters (volume env etc)
