wait...the shure sm58 is actually the shure sm57 with a ball on the end?

The best SM57 for drums is SM58 with removed foam (from mesh ball inside).
Much less problems with sticks, dropping down, etc.
Sounds the same, maybe even better, little bit more detailed, open and fast (SM57 is more wind protected in comparing with open SM58 capsule).
The same with 545 and 565, they have little bit higher tuned presence peak, I mean they sound little bit brighter.
All other is very close to the same.
I am sorting SM58 and 565 depending from signal sources.
If source is duller - I use 565, if brighter - SM58 (* the same with voices !), simply less eq.
Mesh balls have the same thread, so you can "create" 4 different looking mics without any tape.
P.S.
I do not think SM57/58/545/565 is the best mic for drums (and other instruments), but it is one of the best of std solutions.
There are mics like MD441/421, EV's and some others, sounding cleaner and deeper, but it is another talk.
