Hi everyone,

I am beginning to put together equipment for my studio. I dont know much about microphones so I hope you can help. There are two vintage Sennheiser MKE201's at an auction nearby. Are they good for recording and/or do they have value to collectors?

Thanks!
- Dave

shotgun - video camera microphones.

They will come in handy on a lot of things.

Possibly good on voice over work.

They look like they have ME80 capsules fitted, these are great for lots of things, they are a semi shotgun patten and can be used for overheads (mounted a bit higher than normal) acoustic instruments, vocal, almost anything. You see them being used a lot on television by reporters or in the studio as they have a very natural sound and good side rejection great if you want to d any spoken word recording. I have 3 of these but the mic body I have is a K3U which has a XLR plug not a fixed cable.

These are very old - probably 30 or 40 years.

They pre-dated the very old K3 series.

They are battery powered and the batteries are hard to get and expensive (Canford Audio is a UK source for the batteries).

The later K3 can also be phantom powered, but I'm not sure about these very early ones.

The capsule is a standard short-gun with a polar-pattern similar to the newer ME66 and MKH 416.

Some cameras used these batteries, I last get mine from a local battery specialist shop. They are a bit pricey but if you remember to turn them off they last for years (1000's of hours). The reason I still have some batteries and don't use phantom is i like having batteries available when I go out on location.

Cheers
Alan.

You mean outback, bush with no electricity? :)

Different Sennheiser MKE201? Different capsule?

I just came across different-looking Sennheiser MKE201 microphones than the ones shown at the start of this thread. (attached)
Any insights into this different capsule? Also, attached is a picture of the battery for reference. Thanks.

This looks like an early version of a K3-U with a fixed cable, the capsule looks like an ME20 omni. The capsule pattern is usually designated by a little symbol of the side, but the omni usually has 1 set of slots, the cardiod has 2 rows of slots and the semi-shotgun has long slots and is much longer in size.
