Newbie with microphone issues and questions (please help!)

Good points John, I have attached the relavent screen incase OP does not know WTF we are on about!

I would however advise caution re boosting the signal in Windows. Most of the budget (aka 'crap') USB converters found in cheap mixers are 16bit. This would hardly matter but for the fact that they produce a lot of spurious hash and 'whistles'.

The fix is to turn the soundcard rec' gain down to about 5% (yes, FIVE nit a typo) from its default value of 100%. Does not remove the hash but pushes it into the still-not-so-good noise floor of -80dBfs...IF yer lucky. You then have to yodel a bit louder.

Odd thing is, my wee Behringer UCA 202 is 16 bit but pretty clean and returns a noise floor of around -85dB fs. Some 10dB worse than it should be but not bad for 25quid and VASTLY better than vinyl!

Dave.
