I have a phantom power mic and a SM57 (non phantom) mic that I want to hook up at the same time to the back of my 1680.

I was wondering, in teh back of the 1680 there is a "on" switch to turn on the phantom power. if I do this, a current will run through all teh inputs, could this over time wreck or fry my SM57 non phantom pwered mic because it is getting a signal that is not needed?

thanks!

As jrosenstein said, phantom power won't hurt an SM-57.

But you can damage a condenser by plugging it in "hot", or yanking it out "hot". Plug in your mics; mute your monitors; turn on your phantom voltage; turn on your monitors. When shutting things down, turn off your monitors; turn off the phantom voltage; turn off your recorder; disconnect your mics.

Just pretend your SM57 is a phantom powered microphone.
And with any phantom powered microphone wait over one minute
before disconnecting it.

It's also a good idea to give your condenser microphones a few
minutes to power up with phantom power before raising the gain from minimum and using them.
