They seem to blend well without any notching. They're each very close to the drum (time wise), and less than 90 degrees to each other.
The traditional close, angled in over the head position seems kind of hit or miss as to tone and wheather it wants a bottom mic, and still have the too much hat problem. The side is a lot crisper and may not need much of the top mic at all.
