    Hi all,
Which is the best way to go?
I like the idea of buying a separate unit for each.
M Audio Keystation 49ES no pads or controls
    Akai MPD 218 drum machine
    Or
Akai MPK mini which has both
Please give me your opinion on this.

Can't possibly answer this - totally different products offering totally different ways of working them - full size keys, mini keys, no keys etc etc

It boils down to how best you want to make music. Personally - the MPK mini's toy keys means I can't even think using that. If you don't play piano - you might like it.
