Wound G up to G#

Will the snap if left for a long time. Wound G's break easily sometimes even tuning slightly higher. I know some tune up to A and it's hit and miss. Will a 24 be playable at G#. 22 should be durable.

It's a tradeoff when you go smaller gauge because the core has to be smaller or the winding even thinner, or both, either of which can lead to an earlier failure, especially if you're bending a lot. (Which is why the G is typically unwound on most electric sets, save the heavier jazz and flatwounds.)

You could always tune down, e.g., to open D, if you're trying for open E, and put a capo on, saving the worry.

Scale length makes a bit of a difference. It’ll be easier on a Gibson than a Fender. I’m not sure that it matters how long you leave it. If it doesn’t break when you’re tuning up, it probably won’t break until you do something stupid.

Make sure it actually fits and moves freely through the nut slot, though. If it binds up at that point, it’ll be more likely to break at the tuner because as you tune up, that little length in between gets more tension than it should.
