Midi For the Boss Gt-6

i bought a boss Gt-6 from my friend and it has a midi in and midi out on it..what is it for exacly..i mean i also have the vox tonelab and i understand how the midi work on that through the software on the computer but i dont queit get it...i dont need info on what a midi is..i understand that but what is thuye midi for on the boss?
