how to get a thin sound?

Light stings tend to be on the "tinny" side. They just don't vibrate long and strong so yes, lighter strings will sound thinner than a heavy guage. EQ will come in handy. Cut down on bass and peak the upper mids. Avoid reverb and hall effects if you want an empty or thin sound. Reverbs broaden the signal and fill the sound. Use the bridge pickup as opposed to the neck.

How can I make my Strat sound thinner? Right now I find it too creamy and fat. Will lighter strings work? How about compression and some effects?

WOW!!! I'd never thought I'd hear the day when someone complained about a Strat sounding too fat!!! You must have one awesome Strat to have it sounding fat. Usually they sound thinner than my grandfathers underpants!
