I went the other way. If my budget dictated one or the other I'd go mediocre guitar and good amp.

I don't know. I didn't catch that part. I'm just thinking...I think it would suck to have a killer guitar that sounds like shit because of a shitty amp.
 
I think Lee was saying something along the lines of that even though he's got a great guitars at home he just plays through a blues jr

That's probably the perfect amp for him. I'd rather plug a bolt-on neck Epiphone into my Plexis than plug my Les Paul into a Line 6.
