fender jazz bass clicky pickup problems while recording

I have attempted on numerous occasions to record fender jazz basses and always have a problem with a nasty popping clicky sound,
it is not the string hitting the pickups it isnt in the gain stage, its just there
,recently talked to a freind who has the same problem(also only with jazz basses) i always get a killer precision sound so i am used to dealing with some pretty crunchy stuff ,
Anyone else have the same problem or solution?

I find I get these kinds of problems if the tone is not dialed in properly. Too much mid/high frequency content makes things start to clack. If it's an active bass you can try to dial the mids down until it stops. If passive, roll the tone control down to see if it helps.
