a direct box?

i've got a few of them

in general a direct box changes your high-z signal from your guitar/bass/keyboard into a low-z signal. low-z signals have way less noise and microphone cables (star quad with good connectors) suffer less signal loss over longer cable runs. unless you get a really great one (like Canare 18AWG cable) any instrument cable longer than 20' is going to be a piece of shit.

specifically, i use the following direct boxes:

tech 21 sansamp bass DI is used direct into the recorder without an amp. it replaces the amp and microphone in the signal chain. most bass players record direct.

tech21 sanamp classic is used to record guitar direct into the recorder without an amp, and can also be used between the guitar and the amp to create a fuller sound in the amp at low volume levels.

whirlwind director is a general DI box, but it has an attenuator so that you can connect it to the external speaker jack of your Amp. that way, you get the sound of the Amp without having to mic' it.
