DI Bass tones

What are your favorite tone shaping devices to put before an interface for recording electric bass DI?

I use eq, compression, and light saturation plugins after recording, but find that i’m often fiddling with my DI bass tones a lot more than other sound sources & it gets tedious. I’m looking into a pre-amp or a bass amp head for dialling in tones with hardware before recording.

I have a lot of differing bass needs, so versatile options would be appreciated. also low-ish cost suggestions would be great!

I posted a similar Q in recording techniques forum as often struggled to get a decent bass tone. I've ended up going back a step and using my old Tf Pro pre amp (formerly Joe meek). It has phase active Eq and compression. You can probably pick a P3 or T3 up for under £100 second hand. The various bass related VST'S ive tried haven't really cut it so thats where I'm at....
