amplifier miking

I have a question concerning bass amp miking:
my usual setup is to record direct with occassional compression from a Hartke amp or Digitech guitar processor using a hollowbody bass. In planning to record a song with a slap part, I think I'd like to mix the direct signal with a miked 15" cabinet to try to add some "bite". I'd be using an SM58 as the mic. Is there a good distance point to start with? Thanks.

Try about four inches from the speaker, pointing away from the centre of the cone (it can sound really harsh if you point it at the cone)then experiment until you get what you want.

Hope this helps.

You should try miking it because that will give you that feedback and feel you are looking for. Try putting it near the edge like he was saying and then adjust it till you get the sound you want.
