Zoom R24 - recording a live mix on unused channels -- without feedback???

https://www.zoom-na.com/sites/default/files/products/downloads/pdfs/R24_operationManual_english.pdf

My neighbor has a Zoom R24 that he uses for recording and mixing simultaneously during practice or live performance.

Unfortunately, the channels he records on are usually the built-in microphones, and their signal also gets fed to the PA speakers. So while he is trying to capture the ambient mix in the room with the mixer's internal microphones, including the output from the PA speakers, he is also feeding back through the PA.

So he turns the gain on the input channels that he is recording way down to stop the feedback.

Is there a way to record on unused channels of the Zoom without sending the output of those channels to the speakers? I checked the manual but could find nothing helpful.

What about a patch? The mixer seems sophisticated, but neither of us has :RTFM: from start to finish just to suss out this one issue.

Thank you everyone.
