I'm new to recording, and have recently been trying out CUBASE VST/24 3.6 demo from received from local music store.
Today I saw a used (5-7yrs old)TASCAM 38 Recorder/Reproducer (1/2 Tape) and accompanying stand. Was told it was originally $3,800, and was available for $1,200 ($800 usa dollars). Does anyone know anything about this machine. Sure looked nice and I am tempted, but am a novice.

The problem with old technology is that it's old. Gear/transisters, chips, etc., all get a facelife about every 77 days. So, if you are interested in trying to stay up with the technology, I'd go for digital stuff. The prices are really falling on good gear because there is so much of it available. Also, people who got ticked-off at the terrible manuals are still buying better stuff because the price is right.

So, look into a few home studios, check the markets, catalogs, 800 numbers before you buy anything from anyone and stay digital.

Enjoy music man,
