How do digital consoles work?

Our church is in the process of purchasing new equipment, so I thought I would explore the possibility of moving from analog to digital. In the past, I mixed on this

http://www.yamahaproaudio.com/products/mixers/pm1d/index.html

and really enjoyed the flexibility and options that the board had. I know that we will not be able to afford that, but was looking at something like this

http://www.sweetwater.com/store/detail/01V96/

My question is, what would I need to get to expand this to 32 channels? I have no idea how the cards/channels/pre-amps work on these.

If I got something like this:

http://www.sweetwater.com/store/detail/AD96Cable/ and http://www.sweetwater.com/store/detail/MY8AD96/

Would I still need pre-amps for the extra channels?

I like the idea of going digital because everything would come in the box. Besides those pieces, what would I need to get up and running for a digital console, not including amps and loudspeakers?

I guess I could go the route of getting something like this

http://www.sweetwater.com/store/detail/LX7ii-32/

but then I'd need to get more outboard gear for effects.

Any help would be much appreciated.

Thanks.

Probably because your post has 3 mixers that are very much not alike.

I work with Yamaha Commercial in my job and am very familiar with their products. If you can handle a PM1, you can handle any of their digital consoles. The, tiny by comparison, 01v has similar routing just alot less of it. Get used to console manager and you're set to go.

Expansion cards will give you more analog or digital i/o, but analog is at line level, and you'll have to provide the preamps.

Hmmm...I guess that was a bit confusing! But you answered my question...thanks!
