If you have 400 dollars to spend to buy some recording stuff and u where a newbie and u rapped and u wanted to record vocals what would u buy and u want decent sounding stuff like close to cd qauilty .. and ur going to be using ur computer to help edit things what would u buy and why?????????? :)

you wil want a decent mic, a decent preamp, and a recording medium (tape,HD,etc)......

is $400 the budget for everything or do you have some gear already.......

Presuming your computer has a USB port, and you use Windows,

n-tracks from www.fasoft.com recording software $70
Edirol UA-1A USB audio interface $85
ART Tube MP Studio Mic Preamp $70
Studio Projects B3 Condenser mic $160

Plug the mic into the Art preamp, then connect the output of the preamp into the Edirol interface, then the Edirol interface into your PC. Record using n-tracks (EQ), and use some freeware VST reverb plug-ins for vocal reverb.

As always, try before you buy. Leaves $15 change for beer...or maybe towards a mic stand.

I think you need to set realistic expectations for yourself. Realize that while $400 may get you the gear lumbago so nicely pointed out, you will more than likely need to invest more cash. More importantly, you will need to invest a lot of time to learn how to use the gear and devlop your recording skills.

I'd go along with lumbago's suggestion (a very good one by the way). Or, substitute the Studio Projects B1 for the B3, and with the money you save, you can buy a mic cable, a mic stand with boom, and a shock mount for the B1. But either package will give you a great system to start with.

And by the way... NEVER give up on your dream, no matter what others may tell you. You never know... ;)
