Sample question...

Hey guys,

Just a couple questions;

1. Do professionals use drum samples in commercial recordings?

2. When using samples does anyone make duplicates, of say the snare, and put different samples or gogs on each to mix to taste?

3. I have some extra cash that I wanted to spend on a mic that would improve my drum mic collection...prefferably for snare...I have;
sm57 that I use for snare, I beta52 that I use for kick, 2 sm 58s that I use for toms (I have a drummer that uses only 2 toms) and 2 mxl 993s that I use as overheads. Any suggestions?

Thanks in advance,

James D.

audix d2 for toms. i love them.

i have one md421 which i throw on a tom sometimes too. also sounds awesome (but much more money). i wish i had more.

1. Yes

2. Sometimes the sample is mixed with the original track, sometimes the sample replaces it. It all depends. I've known guys to layer 5 or 6 samples on a kick.

3. You are doing OK for the drum mics. 421's on the toms would be an improvement.

What is it you aren't getting out of the 57 on the snare?
