Unpossible!
Would it be better to record in a large "live" room, or a small "dead" room?

A large live room has a better chance of not having problems in the low end. Very important for drums.
A small dead room might not be big enough to let the low end blossom.
 
If u record it in a dead room, u can always add reverb later. If u record drums individually u can ad reverb to certain ones. Or if u like to be genuine like me, i would do it in a room where it echoes, but not drowned in reverb
 
I get great results in my small room. (Totally dead)
8' x 9'

I've recorded in the same large open room three times with great results also.
80' X 100' high ceiling

I've tried med size rooms and got nothing even close to useable. 15' x 24' low ceiling

Its just different flavors. I generally like bigger rooms, but I know some engineers that really like small tight rooms (it was all the rage in the 70s). My new studio has a medium sized room and is oddly one of the best drum rooms I have ever worked it. Very often I use no effects at all in the mix.
