Drum Micing Suggestions?

Hey

I'm trying to get some good recordings but I always seem to fail when it comes to drums. I'm just wondering for any suggestions. We have an Alesis Firewire 12, so we can get each individual channel sent to the software we use. Plus we have phantom power for each mic we have.

We have

4 Sennheiser e604

1 Sennheiser Kick drum mic

1 SM57

2 Small-Diaphragm Studio Condensers

1 Large Diaphragm Condensor

Any suggestions?

The search is your friend. There's several posts on this. But if it was me, I would start with the following: 604's on toms. 57 or 604 on snare. Maybe mic the bottom if you like the sound and have an extra mic. Kick mic on the kick (big surprise there). SDC for overheads in a spaced stereo pair, ortf, or XY. Play with it and find what gets the sound you like. I'd put the LDC out about 6-10 ft and 3-4 ft up. Again, play with it to find what works best. If your room sounds good and has nice, tall ceilings and what more room sound, you can move it out and up more. Remember to always check for phase. That's where I'd start.
