A solution to some of the intermittent behavior problems with my Tascam FW-1884 was to increase the buffer size. I was getting clicks and audio hash when pushing the CPU load up in Ableton Live's Test Tone. So I increased the buffer (Audio Latency in the Control Panel) from 256 to 512.
I left it there and later began to realize that the thing started up more reliably. The [Control Panel] button worked 90% of the time, The audio connections were more reliable (used to show firewire indicator but no sound would move in or out)
It still heads South after using the computer for general purposes for varying lengths of time but, the whole OS goes awry. I hope someday this tip helps someone else.
