Help! Weird Cubase And Alesis Multimix Problem!

Hi,

Ive been recording with my Alesis Multimix 8 Firewire interface into Cubase SX on my laptop for some time and it worked perfectly, I could record and edit loads of track at once and there were no problems at all. After having some problems with spyware and lack of space on my laptop hard drive, i replaced it about 2 months ago with an 80gb, faster hard drive. After installing everything on this hard drive, I tested recording and it seemed like everything worked, however, now i have started to record properly it seems it doesnt work as well as i thought. When recording a track, cubase will randomly, at different times just pause for about a second and then drop the recording and continue with just playback. I can hit record again and recording will continue but will drop out again later and so on. If i just playback a track, the sound will skip for a bit randomly. When monitoring the VST performance, everything is fine right up untill the audio skips, when the HD overload light comes on. I have not been able to record for more than a minute and a half without it doing this, usually recording lasts only about 50 seconds. It doesnt matter how many tracks i am recording, it still does the same thing. I have tried changing buffer size etc but it does not work. I also noticed when playing normal audio in Windows Media Player, the audio will slightly skip, every 30 sec or so...I dont know if this is related.

Please help because i want to get back to recording again and this just seems strange seeing as it worked perfectly before i changed the hard drive.

Ps My laptop is a Intel Pentium 4 M, 1.8 Ghz, 1 Gb RAM, so theres no problem there.

Thanks

If your software is registered you are entitled to technical support from Steinberg. You should give that a go.

Are you using an asio driver? The buffer size is usually the reason with dropouts, crackles and glitches during playback.

yer, technical support is probably where ill have to go, though id try this first, see if n e ones had a similar problem. Yer im using an asio driver, the lastest drivers from Alesis aswell and ive played around with all different buffer sizes, im starting to think its a problem with my hard drive interfering or caussing glitches or sumtin, just because it worked well with my other hard drive and it seems to affect music in WMP aswell

cheers

is it an ide hard drive ?

noidea about laptops but you could check if dma is enabled on the ide channel

To change IDE controller settings
Open Device Manager.
Double-click IDE ATA/ATAPI controllers, right-click the Integrated Device Electronics (IDE) device for which you want to change advanced settings, and then click Properties.
On the Advanced Settings tab, make the desired changes, and then click OK

best of luck

yep the primary IDE channel is set to DMA if available, so i dnt think that the problem, fanx n e way.

I performed a HDD test and it i think came back saying the average read speed was around 26Mbit/sec, not sure if this is normal, CPU performance seems to be running between about 30% with internet explorer, msn, and firefox with 5 tabs running. Dont know if that give some more info

cheers

if your pegging the hard drive meter then thats that. the drive sounds like it has major performance issues with the laptop and you should look up the manufacture and see what the problem is or if there are known conflicts with your laptop

hmm i do think its a hard drive problem now, its just on the VST performance meter, its fine, shows no work at all really untill the point where the audio skips or recording cuts off and the meter just briefly peaks and overloads, for like less then a second

Check your buffers in your firewire control panel, you may have to increase the buffers. Or you could go into the device menu and adjust them there

hey, dw ive fixed it all now...i hope, turns out it was the internal ethernet port in my laptop being enabled, there was nothing plugged in, it was just turned on and cuasing interferance with all the sound on my laptop. I never though to check the network card which is weird coz ive allwayz bin so careful to disable my wireless connection b4 recording, any way, fanx alot for your help
