using outboard gear with digi 002

I need some guidance on using outboard gear with a digi 002. We've got some really nice classic compressors and reverb units that I'm interested in using. Obviously it sounds like shite if you plug directly into the digi 002. I've heard mention of a/d converters for this sort of thing.

Is this true? Is there one that doesn't suck that is under $1k?
Is a mixer needed?
And is there a way to do this after recording the source instead of before?

Why does it sound bad plugging directly into the 002's AD converters?

You shouldn't need the world's best converters to do this.

Do do this on an already recording track, just route an insert to an output on the 002, plug that output to the input on the compressor, then out from the compressor into a line input (not a mic pre) on the 002. get your settings right, then hit record!

There WILL be latency, so be prepared to move the track over afterwards to line it up where it needs to be. I like to have a frame of a 1k tone on a couple of tracks (including the one being recorded thru) so that I can use it as a guide for lining up after the fact.
