recorded track gets behind in time

Let's say you're adding a bass track, just for instance, to a song and you've already added an auxillary reverb channel and a master fader channel with let's say a compressor, eq, and maxim.

My new tracks I add in later have been playing behind a hair, I think because of the latency from the plugins on the master fader.

I found by making the master fader inactive, I improve the sync of the new track and the previously recorded tracks. Does this sound right?

That doesn't make sense to me.
Latency caused by plugins on the master fader would affect all tracks equally, since they are all processed by the master chain.

It sounds more like you're describing hardware latency.
If you haven't already, look into your buffer size settings.

Lower = lower latency + less stable. Good for recording.
Higher = greater latency + more stable. Good for mixing.

as above, sounds like hardware latency to me also, apart from your buffer settings in tools, avid have a good read on setting up your rig in xp, even a couple of register tweeks, and it does help. also, crank up the usage meter in tools, and check your hd read / write, that can also make a little difference.
