CPU overload pro tools 8.05

Can anyone help me: I use Pro Tools LE 8.05 with an iMac 3.06GHZ Intel Core Duo, 4 GB Memory, recording to an external fire wire hard drive with 7200 rpm (which I bought to resolve the actual problem, which it didn't), and no matter how many channels or plug ins I use, it tells me after a couple of minutes that I run out of CPU power (error 6101).
It does not help to increase or lower the buffer size and/ or cpu usage limit.
What else can I do??

I had the same problem when I got my new interface, been a cubase user for years but got 8 SE with it, tried it out got the same issue, my solution back to cubase

Run this bad boy before all else.

Sorts 90% of dopey PT errors.

I was gonna say that he should adjust his playback settings and also, in the Preferences tab, adjust the Record Allocation to no more than 5-6 min.

I haven't checked out ur link, steen... can you elaborate plz?

EDIT: I can't check it out, I should say. I have PC.

It's a little app that trashes ProTools preferences.

I tell pretty much everyone to run it before all else, because it's sorted out annoying errors no end of times for me.
