sa what is this backup project file in Reaper?

I have periodically updated Reaper, its hard to keep up with all of the updates and enhancements... anyway, at some point (maybe after 2.0?) it started to save a backup project file, so what is the point of that backup project file?

anybody have any general tips on file management?
 
There should be a .bak of every project you are working on. Its so that you can open a project in case it gets corrupted. Right click it and open with a text editor and take a look. Except for the VST plugin parameters its pretty much human readable
