Reaper compressor not working

Hey all I just bought a fast track pro 2 ch and I love it. When I hooked it up to Reaper the compressor wouldn't work. The weird thing about this is that, I've been using the EQ and reverb plugins which work great but the compressor doesn't do anything. Does anyone have any ideas?

What compressor are you referring to?

Is it the Reaper ReaComp plugin?

ReaComp is a dandy compressor that has not been problematic.

Perhaps if you explain what you are trying to do and how you are doing it, it may help.

Yes I know what compression is, but i can't figure out why the ReaComp plugin isn't working, when other plugins are. I'm using the compression to cap the vocal track that is peaking at the end of the song.

When you load up ReaComp, you then need to adjust various settings. For example, it loads with a compression ratio of 1:1, which means no compression. Adjust this ratio, set the threshold to the point above which you want compression to occur, and if you want to get rid of some nasty spikes, set a very short attack time.

I am 99.9% certain that your ReaComp is working.

I know how to use the compressor! No matter what settings I adjust, the compressor does nothing. Other plugins that I have used work, but this plugin isn't being responsive.

Just for thoroughness, you have tried using ridiculous settings that no one in their right mind would ever use just to ensure that it's not working at all, right?
i.e. turn the threshold all the way down, and turn the ratio all the way up so that it all but mutes the channel.

If it's still not doing anything then.
1. What is it firing on? There should be a drop-down in the ReaComp controls that determines which channels control the compression. By default, it should be the mains (1 and 2, or the standard stereo output of the channel), but if it somehow got set to auxiliary (a.k.a. channels 3 and 4, which may not even exist), it won't seem to do anything.
2. What are your FX buffer settings? If your buffer settings are wonky, you might not notice changes to your effects in a timely manner.
3. Is the track armed for recording? Reaper prioritizes Effects on playback to keep itsself from grinding to a halt when the CPU is taxed. If you're pushing the limits of your system resources, it may just drop some effects such as ReaComp. Arming the track gives it a higher priority so that this is less likely to happen.

Thanks for the advice. Although points 2 and 3 that you made are very clear, I'm not aware of a drop down menu for that specific purpose. However there is a blank drop down menu that I don't know what its for. It is located directly beneath the preset drop down menu. Is this the one your referring to? Do you know how I'd get it to populate?

I sec, I don't have Reaper on this comp, so I'll have to image search to find the plugin...

In ReaComp's controls, there should be a drop-down labeled "Detector Input" between "Kneesize" and "Lowpass"
In order for it to work based on the standard stereo mix of your track, it needs to be set to "Main Input L+R".

I found the drop down menu your talking about and it was set to "Main Input L+R". So that wasn't my problem, as it turned out I needed to update Reaper. The other problem that I'm sad to admit happened due to operator error and that was that I didn't have the threshold low enough to hear the compression taking effect. I'm used to using the compressor in pro tools "bomb factory" which is allot more simple than ReaComp.
thanx for your help

Now that's funny.

. Thank you to those who where helpful and not just making shitty comments. Also no one every said to lower the threshold.
