Reaper 5.11 & 5.12 and MP4 files

Grumpy Mod
My experience with Reaper since 2008 has been generally pleasurable and trouble-free.

I wasn't totally enamoured with the 5.0 interface, but happy that I could use the previous interface.

But I'm bamboozled by 5.11 and 5.12. When I install either, both garble MP4 files on playback. The MP4 files are glitchy and sounded like they're dropped an octave.

In versions up to and including 5.0, MP4 files play perfectly.

So I am at a loss as to why they are so unhappy with the 5.11 and 5.12.

I've reverted back to 5.1, which gives me no bother.

Note that I'm still using XP!

Any ideas?

mp4 as in video files or just the audio portion?

If the former a) reaper's never been great for video IME.
b) if you're on XP, you're probably running into codec issues.

If the latter, I have no clue.

They've added a bunch of new video crap that sounds really cool, but I haven't gotten around to trying it because I'm dreading the mess of trying to setup all the different codecs and whatever to make it work.

I'd be willing to bet that it's a codec problem somewhere along the line. The folks on the Reaper forum could probably help you sort it out pretty quick.

I don't really trust those compressed format files for editing and processing. There are all kinds if ways that things can go wrong in that process which can be easily avoided by converting to a flat format first. (Course there's a lot that can go wrong in that process too...)

Problem solved.

I installed VLC 2.2.1, and now Reaper is playing nice with MP4s gain.

I previously was running VLC 2.0.1
