what should I set my buffer latency at?

I have been searching through past posts and have learned a few things. Like: lower latency is good, be can cause drop out... higher latency can cause popping and cracking... is this right so far? I don't know...

So, my question basically is what is a good setting for latency. I'm using ASIO 2.0 drivers and recording at 24/96 with Sonar 2.2xl. Help me understand how it all works.

Too low latency can cause pops, crackles and dropouts. High latency means steady playback and a steady setup. The trick is to find the lowest usable latency setting...

My buffersettings on the soundcard is set to 128. That gives me (after I hit the Waveprofiler-button in Options -> Audio, of course) 2.9 ms latency with WDM-drivers, which is very good... If I use too many softsynths and effects (rarely happens) I need to rise the latency to avoid dropouts. :)

(The settings are equal for ASIO-drivers, only that the Waveprofiler button is changed to the ASIO Panel-button).
