Sonar HS6 does not connect midi track to TTS-1 synth

Hello,

I have used Cakewalk since first light (3.0) and later Sonar (HS6) in midi mode successfully with windows95, 98, 7 and now Windows 10.
I have used external keyboard and synths via PC and suitable interfaces (Motu, M-Audio).
Now I wanted to learn how to use soft synths, such as the built in TTS-1.
To that end, I started with the HS6 tutorial and the example on soft synth. However, I cannot get any sound out when playing the combination.
Pressing the preview buttons on the synth it plays as expected. HS6 to PC, to line out, to external amp.
Play the midi file to M-Audio interface, external synth and audio amp works fine.
Therefore, I conclude that the pieces are working fine but I do not have connected the midi track output to the TTS-1 synth input correctly.

For reference, the midi track output is set to TTS-1 1 according to the label.
The TTS-1 1 synth input says : Cakewalk TTS-1 1 Output Stereo. If I select none, the preview has no sound output but level bar shows activity when pressed.
What is wrong ?

Thanks
