recording audio with 2496 m audio sound card and behringer 802x mixer

I have sonar 2.1.
When I record audio, it seems to pick up all the other tracks as well, how do I mute the other tracks so they don't get rerecorded again? whilst still hearing playback on my headphones?

I've stuck the leads in as many different combinations as possible to try to solve the problem but with no luck.
the audiophile 2496 has midi in and out and audio in and out,

does anyone have a similar set up? or is there something in the control panel I need to change?

Did you mean you are building up a track one instrument at a time?
If so what you need to do is not playback the rest of the tracks back into the input while recording a new track.
I dont have your mixer. but it's all a question of routing.
Route the prerecorded tracks to your monitor headphone mix only and record just the intrument to a new track.
I hope this helps and makes sense to you.
