Can I separately control vol/pan on drum parts on separate tracks but same midi ch.

I am using Cakewalk Pro Audio 9 and I am trying to keep my midi drum parts on different tracks but since they are using the same midi channel, when I adjust any level on one instrument it changes on all instruments that are on that channel also. For example: I would like to add midi reverb to the snare but not the kick, or pan the toms from left to right. What is the best way to do this? This may be a midi thing - I don't know! I am using the Roland GS midi sound module. I know that I could just record my midi drum parts as audio tracks and accomplish this but I would like to keep the drums midi as long as I could - its easier for editing and changing parts.

Any ideas?

I don,t think you can do it that way.

Youre gonna have to put each part on a different
midi channnel.. EX. kick on ch 10 snare on ch11
hi hat ch12 etc etc and assign them their own tracks.
I normally try to line the track channel numbers
with the midi channel numbers just for the
sake of simplicity

It gives you more control of the mix that
way..but remember...you can have up to 256
tracks of midi..but you can only send midi
information on 16 channels..meaning after
16 ..your tracks are gonna have to start
sharing midi channel assignments..make
sense?... thats the way I do it..If I get to the
point where I need more than 16..I would
convert the Midi to audio and proceed on
I dont use effects during the Midi composition
phase. I assign the volume and panning in the
track view. That way I dont have to worry about
realinging the faders and the pan controls
everytime I reopen the project.

I hope this helps mate!

If anyone knows different..let us know

yes..thats is correct..as long as the
other port is routed to a different
sound module..is this correct?

Thanks!

Thanks guys, I'm gonna try using different channels for my drum sounds - I just use channel 10 because that is the default channel for this sound module. I guess I have to figure out how to do that now. I do have another midi in/out on my SB card which I left im my PC after installing my new Aardvark LX6 (I left it in just to see if it would work and it works perfectly along side the Aardvark).

thanks again,
Nick
