When I try to record my guitar I arm audio channel 2 (connected to surelite scarlett interface) but when I press the record button at the top the green play button also lights up and then instead of recording the guitar a thick black line appears in the track rather than the guitar inputs.

Are you arming the main recording? Are you in Session View or Arrangement View?
Most importantly, make sure you are selecting the correct channel. When you strum the guitar, check the input drop down and see which input you are connected too. Each connection on the interface is a channel. Double check that you have the one you are connected to selected.
