As far as mic's go

I've used phantom power, but I really don't know how much difference it makes. I want my mics and my guitar to have a punchy sound, but still unsure about it. I've looked at the manual, but still need help as far as getting a good sound. Thanks. Man.

only a condenser mic needs phantom power,a dynamic doesn't.
do you know what you have?

A condenser mic will only work with phantom power on. A dynamic mic will work just the same with or without it (hence the name 'phantom'). Phantom power will break a ribbon mic (in most cases), so turn it off.

As far as getting the sound you want, you want to look at things like mic placement, room treatment, performance, instrument quality.
