From what I remember you have to press utility and song edit to get into the right mode. Then you press record, dial in a pattern and then press enter. It will move to the next section, you can either dial in another pattern or press enter again.
Remember, some patterns are 2 bars, so it will move to #3 after you press enter, and then #5 etc.
