Audio to MIDI

Hi

So I find the convert harmony/melody to midi feature on Ableton pretty cool. I record primarily through my bass and have been able to convert some of the audio into midi (needs a bit of cleaning up). My question is how do I make the midi sound like an electric guitar. Is it as easy as just applying a digital instrument or do I need to do more (Like transpose etc. ?). Or Am I missing something here and what I'm trying to do is BS ?

You are on the right track.

Step 1 (which you've already done) is to get your midi,

Step 2: load the midi file into a track in a DAW

Step 3: apply a VSTi instrument (e.g. a specific guitar sound from somewhere) or effect (e.g. a guitar sound emulator such as Guitar Rig) onto the track.

Step 4: adjust pitch of the midi to suit the sound you are seeking. (If your midi is derived from bass audio, then you probably need to shift all the notes up an octave or two). Adjust VST parameters accordingly.
