Reel deep thoughts...
When I started getting into reel to reel maintenance the manual for my Tascam 58 called for spring guages. I couldn't find any in my area, and what I could find on the internet were prohibitively expensive.
I went down to the local hardware store and selected some expansion springs, purchased some hooks, found some heavy plastic material and made my own. Cost me about $5-10. I calibrated them by using a postage scale and a jug of water...add water in known increments (according to the reading on the postal scale), and then mark the plastic strip.
Here's a picture...sorry its small. I can offer more detail if anybody is interested. These worked great for adjusting the brakes and pinch roller pressure.
