I record from Line Out of the SC-88 Pro to Line In of the SB AWE32 to make a WAV file. In the Creative Mixer, there are options for INPUT GAIN (x1, x2 and x4). What are the difference among these options. If I set it to x4 (and set the recording level accordingly), will it help to increase the Signal to Noise ratio?

Really depends on the output level of that SC-88 Pro. My old SC-88 has a line out volume control on the front that must be adjusted to properly interface with the digital recording card. Try each gain selection with a short MIDI piece and see if anything clips. Once you have that info you shouldn't have to repeat the experiment for each recording.
