Recording a Sonor Basswood kit

I have a Sonor Force 1007 that I would like to record some covers with. I know it's Sonor's low end kit but it's my first acoustic kit (I used to play a Roland electronic drum set) and it's just a start :) Anyhow, they are cheaper 9ply basswood shells, 10/12/14/20.

Does anybody here have experience with Sonor basswood kits? (507,1007, Safari, Bop). What heads did you use? I noticed that because they are low end shells that the bearing edges are rough, should I attempt to sand them smooth? Thanks

You can try to sand them, but be careful. You might do more harm than good. The shell material isn't as crucial as the style of head and proper tuning.

Coated heads - warmer, flat sound
Clear heads - brighter, more open.
2 ply - Fast attack, quick decay
1 ply - less attack, more resonant

Thanks Greg. I've several heads to try now, after watching a few tom tuning video's that is. The only acoustic drum I've ever tuned is a snare (5.5" Black Beauty), the thought of 'not' cranking the lugs down is foreign to me :)
