Midi Functions on MR-8

I read through the manual but it was pretty brief. What do people use these for? The explination was kind of brief in the manual. All my midi stuff is usb so i lent my cables out but i was wondering if you can use this piece to control software apps. If so i'm going to pick up a cable tomorrow. Well, i'll probably pick one up regaurdless but just curious.
 
I use it to record a midi sequence at the same tempo as the MR8 tempo click.
When I press record the midi out of the MR8 starts the sequence on my computer which plays through my synth at the same tempo as the MR8.
This way the audio recorded from the synth is in synchronized with the tempo in the MR8 and in this way I can export these files to Cakewalk and match to the same tempo. I find that this way it is easier to CUT-PASTE bars of music and it is the only way to add some other sequenced part to the music later.
