General help recording midi with Acid music studio 7

I'm attempting to record midi for the first time with Acid Music Studio 7 (a crap program, I know) and I don't understand a lot of key elements of midi recording. Here are some issues that are most important to the music I'm making.

1. What is the difference between DLS and VST instruments?
2. What are triggers and how are they useful?
3. Where can I acquire more soft synth sounds (I don't really like the ones included with the program), and would the ones I download be DLS or VST? (As I said, I don't understand the difference, and I haven't attempted using VST yet).

PS: I just encountered a problem recording midi; I can't do it anymore. Whenever I try to record, a message saying "The device is in use by another application" pops on the screen and no sound is directed from my keyboard to the computer. This problem just spontaneously happened and I don't know how to fix it.
